On October 22, 2025, Royal Canin Malta had the pleasure of hosting an exclusive educational event for veterinarians and vet clinic nurses at Veranda, Rabat. The evening focused on the topic “With Gastrointestinal Tract Problems – Every Mouthful Counts”, highlighting the importance of tailored nutrition in supporting pets with digestive health issues. We were honored to welcome Professor Alex German, Professor of Small Animal Medicine at the University of Liverpool, as our guest speaker. Professor German shared his expertise and valuable insights on gastrointestinal disorders, clinical nutrition, and the crucial role diet plays in managing chronic digestive problems in cats and dogs. It was a wonderful opportunity to meet and engage with our local vets and their teams, exchange ideas, and strengthen our shared commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of pets through science-based nutrition. We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Professor German for his inspiring presentation and to all veterinary professionals who attended and contributed to the success of this event. Together, we continue working towards a healthier future for pets — because every mouthful counts.

Bringing home a new puppy is an exciting adventure — full of cuddles, playtime, and plenty of learning. But one of the most important things you can do as a new dog owner is start training early. The right habits now will shape your puppy into a happy, well-adjusted adult dog. Here are five essential tips to help you (and your pup) start strong: 1. Start Early, Stay Consistent: Puppies begin learning from day one, so it’s important to start training as soon as they come home. Use clear, simple commands like sit, stay, and come, and repeat them regularly. Consistency builds confidence and helps your puppy understand what's expected — especially when the whole family is on the same page. 2. Use Positive Reinforcement: Reward-based training is not only more effective — it’s more enjoyable for both of you. Treats, praise, and playtime help reinforce good behavior and strengthen your bond. Choose small, healthy treats that are easy for puppies to digest. (Pro tip: pair rewards with a high-quality puppy diet, like Royal Canin’s Puppy formulas, to support learning and development from the inside out.) 3. Socialize Early and Often: The first few months of a puppy’s life are crucial for social development. Safely introduce your pup to new people, other dogs, different environments, and everyday sounds. Puppy classes or short trips to pet-friendly places can help them build confidence and reduce anxiety later in life. 4. Establish a Routine: Dogs love structure — and puppies especially benefit from a regular schedule. Set consistent times for feeding, potty breaks, training, and play. A predictable routine makes housetraining easier and helps your puppy settle into their new home. Feeding a balanced, breed- and size-specific puppy food like Royal Canin can also help regulate digestion and energy levels throughout the day. 5. Be Patient and Stay Positive: Training takes time. Some days will be easier than others — and that’s okay. Puppies are constantly learning, and setbacks are part of the process. Stay positive, keep sessions short and fun, and remember: your encouragement means the world to your pup. Final Thoughts: Training a puppy can be challenging, but it’s also one of the most rewarding parts of pet parenthood. With the right mix of consistency, patience, and quality nutrition, you’ll be giving your pup the best possible start in life. Looking for the right food to support your puppy’s training and development? Royal Canin offers breed-specific and size-specific formulas tailored to their unique nutritional needs — because every puppy deserves a healthy beginning.

As pet parents, we all want the best for our furry companions. Whether it's a plush toy to keep them entertained or a scratching post to save the sofa, finding fun, functional pet products is part of the joy of having an animal in your life. But lately, there’s been a troubling trend: the rise of ultra-cheap pet toys and scratchers flooding online marketplaces. While the price tags might look tempting, the reality is that many of these products come with hidden dangers that can seriously compromise your pet’s health and well-being. What’s Really in These Budget Pet Products? When something sounds too good to be true, it often is. Ultra-low-cost pet items are often mass-produced with minimal quality control and questionable materials. Independent studies have found that some of these products—especially those imported from overseas—contain toxic substances like: • Formaldehyde – a known carcinogen that can irritate the skin, eyes, and respiratory system • Phthalates – chemicals used to soften plastic, which can disrupt hormone function • Lead and heavy metals – dangerous even in small amounts, especially if ingested These toxins may not be listed anywhere in the product description, and many manufacturers don’t disclose their materials or sourcing practices. With limited regulatory oversight, especially for imported goods, there's no guarantee that these products are safe for your pets to chew, claw, or cuddle. The Real Risks to Your Pet’s Health Pets interact with their toys and scratchers in ways that make them especially vulnerable to harmful substances. Dogs chew, tug, and often swallow parts of their toys. Cats scratch, bite, and rub their faces on scratchers and plush mice. If these items are poorly made or contain toxic chemicals, they can cause: • Digestive issues from swallowing loose parts or toxic fibers • Allergic reactions or burns from irritating chemicals • Chronic exposure effects, including hormone disruption or organ damage, with repeated contact There have even been cases where pets required emergency surgery after ingesting small parts that broke off a low-quality toy. How to Spot Safer Pet Products Protecting your pet doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune—it just means being more intentional with your purchases. Here’s what to look for: • Natural, non-toxic materials: Choose toys made from untreated cotton, wool, sisal, or BPA-free rubber. • Third-party certifications: Look for safety certifications such as OEKO-TEX®, ASTM, or EN71. • Clear labeling and transparency: Reputable brands disclose their materials and often provide insight into their manufacturing processes. • Durability: Well-made toys and scratchers don’t fall apart after a few uses. Investing in quality can actually save money over time. Why Quality Matters More Than Quantity We get it—pet supplies add up. But when it comes to toys and scratchers, buying fewer, better-quality items is often safer, more economical, and better for the environment. Quality products last longer, reduce waste, and give you peace of mind that your pet is safe and healthy. Supporting responsible businesses that prioritize sustainability and safety also helps shift the industry away from harmful mass production practices. When we make conscious choices as consumers, we create demand for better standards across the board. Final Thoughts: Put Your Pet’s Safety First Your pet relies on you to make safe choices for them. While it’s tempting to grab the cheapest option in your online cart, it's worth asking: what is this product really made of, and is it safe for my pet? By choosing quality over quantity and doing a little research, you’re not just buying a toy—you’re investing in your pet’s happiness and health. And that’s something you can feel truly good about.

What Are Healthy Fats for Pets? Fats are more than just an energy source—they’re the unsung heroes of pet nutrition. These essential nutrients provide the building blocks for countless vital functions in your pet’s body. From fueling physical activity to supporting healthy cells, fats and fatty acids are crucial for your pet’s overall wellbeing. But not all fats are created equal. The quality and balance of fats in your pet’s diet can make a huge difference. Why Are Fatty Acids Important for Dogs and Cats? Essential fatty acids, like Omega-3 and Omega-6, are vital for your pet’s health—but here’s the catch: they can’t produce these nutrients on their own. That means it's up to us to provide them through nutritious pet food or high-quality supplements. Benefits of omega fatty acids for pets include: • A shiny, soft coat • Hydrated, itch-free skin • Brain development (especially in puppies and kittens) • Joint support and mobility • A stronger immune system The right balance of omega fatty acids helps your pet look and feel their best from the inside out. Everyday Wellness: The Role of Healthy Fats When your pet gets the right fats in the right amounts, you’ll notice the difference: • A more vibrant, glossy coat • Healthy, hydrated skin • Better joint mobility—especially for senior pets • Higher energy and improved focus • Enhanced immune function and overall vitality A lack of healthy fats, on the other hand, can lead to dull fur, flaky skin, joint stiffness, and low energy. Not All Pet Fats Are Created Equal It’s important to choose high-quality fat sources in your pet’s diet. Avoid low-grade, heavily processed fats that offer little nutrition. Instead, look for: • Salmon oil for pets • Flaxseed • Chicken fat (from whole, natural sources) These ingredients support optimal health and reduce the risk of inflammation or unnecessary weight gain. Always read pet food labels and avoid mystery ingredients or artificial additives. Signs Your Pet Might Be Missing Essential Fatty Acids If your dog or cat isn’t getting enough essential fatty acids, they may show signs like: • Dry or brittle coat • Excessive shedding • Itchy, flaky skin • Frequent ear infections • Low energy • Stiff joints or mobility issues Noticing these symptoms? It might be time to re-evaluate your pet’s diet or speak to your vet about adding a high-quality omega supplement. The bottom line is; Fats aren’t just filler—they’re foundational. By giving your pet the right fats and fatty acids, you’re not just feeding them—you’re truly nourishing them.
